The first Fraunhofer ICT conference on the characterisation, testing and evaluation of redox flow batteries. On 9 March 2027 in Pfinztal.
Programme, registration and current details on the official Fraunhofer ICT event page.
On 9 March 2027, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT will host the first Flow Battery Day. The one-day conference is dedicated to the question of how redox flow batteries are characterised, tested, diagnosed and compared. It brings together researchers from universities, research institutes and industry in Pfinztal.
Redox flow batteries are becoming increasingly important for stationary and long-duration energy storage. Alongside new electrolytes, electrodes, membranes and cell concepts, reliable characterisation of these materials and systems is becoming ever more important. Meaningful comparisons require advanced experimental methods and a clear understanding of measurement conditions, degradation mechanisms, uncertainty and reproducibility.
The scope ranges from fundamental material and electrolyte characterisation to the testing and validation of electrodes, membranes, cells, stacks and complete systems. The conference asks not only what performance flow batteries deliver, but also how that performance is measured, interpreted and compared.
A special feature of this conference: it is organised entirely by the doctoral researchers of the Flow Battery group at Fraunhofer ICT. Poster discussions and scientific exchange across all stages of development create space for new collaborations.
Built on flow battery research at Fraunhofer ICT
The organiser is the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, based in Pfinztal. The conference chair is Dr. Jens Noack. The conference is organised by the doctoral researchers of the Flow Battery group.
Advanced Characterization and Testing for Flow Batteries
The focus is on the characterisation, testing, diagnosis and evaluation of flow batteries. The conference marks the start of an annual conference series for the redox flow community at Fraunhofer ICT. It connects electrochemical methods, operando diagnostics, accelerated ageing tests and degradation analyses with the question of robust benchmarks and reproducible results.
Contributions range from the fundamental characterisation of redox-active materials and electrolytes to the validation of cells, stacks and systems. The aim is to make measurement practices comparable and to strengthen exchange on shared challenges.
